This spring I entered a The Survey of Bookish Habits in to a juried student exhibition and the work was accepted! I offered a book of Bookish Habits, three clipboards with surveys, a double tray holding blank and completed surveys, and some Bic pens. There are instructions with the book:
Each painting in this book illustrates one individual’s reply to The Survey of Bookish Habits which asks respondents to focus on “bookishness” and how it shows up in their gestures and intentions. Read the paintings. Think about your Bookish Habits. Take the survey. Inspire a painting.
I worked with local book binder Kathie Shepherd who swiftly understood my need. The book is 2 feet square with one painting mounted on each of the 10 pages. The cover is 300 lb. watercolor paper, with black linen binding tape to finish the coptic stitch. Open flat, it is 48 inches wide. The whole set up requires a six foot table, so two people can complete surveys, while another two read through the paintings.
The Vanguard Showcase opened to the public this Monday, April 17, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. and remains on display until April 30, 2023. Twenty-eight individual responses to the Survey of Bookish Habits were received during the exhibit.
